Who doesnt love a good party drug? And when it comes to party drugs cocaine is definitely a my favorite but where did this little white powder come from? lets dive into the sordid history of cocaine guys..

Andy Samberg from SNL Digital Shorts

It all started in south america, where the indigenous people discovered that the leaves of the coca plant had a little something extra when chewed. They believed it had spiritual properties and used it in religious ceremonies and as a natural remedy for hunger and fatigue. Fast forward a few hundred years and a german scientist Albert Niemann isolated the active ingredient in the leaves and called it "cocaine" and so the modern era of cocaine abuse was born.

In the late 1800s cocaine became a popular ingredient in tonics and elixirs that were marketed as cures for everything from headaches to impotence. It was even included in the original formula for Coca-Cola (hence the name). But it wasn’t until the 1970s that cocaine really took off and became the drug of choice for the rich and famous.

Celebrities like Elvis Presley, John Belushi all famously fell victim to cocaine addiction. And lets not forget all the politicians and Wall Street executives who snorted their way through the 1980s, helping to fuel the so called "cocaine boom."

But of course with great power (and high) comes great responsibility (or lack thereof). The cocaine boom eventually led to a surge in crime and violence as drug cartels fought for control of the lucrative trade. And lets not forget the countless individuals whose lives have been ruined by addiction to this destructive substance.

So there you have it. The wild and crazy history of cocaine from ancient spiritual plant to modern days party drug, with a few stops along the way for criminal empires and personal tragedies. Its a wild ride guys. Buckle up and enjoy the high (just remember to stay safe)
